Softball Run-Rules Hartford, Austin Peay Saturday In Adidas Tournament

Eagles Pounded Out 25 Hits On The Day

ROCK HILL, SC— Winthrop scored 19 runs on 25 hits to earn an 8-0 win over Hartford in five innings and an 11-3 win over Austin Peay in six innings, Saturday afternoon on day two of the Adidas Tournament.

Winthrop has won three straight are improves to 8-9 on the year as it has now scored 28 runs in its first three home games. Hartford fell to 0-2 on the year while Austin Peay is now 1-8.

"We finally put together two complete games," said Winthrop head coach Mark Cooke. "Dallas had a great day. I couldn't tell you who all of our hitters were as everyone seemed to be getting hits left and right. We did a really good job at driving base runners in. I thought defensively we played well in both games."

The Eagles won both games on the eight-run rule with walk-off hits in each as well.

In the opening game of the day Kristy Noble provided a two-RBI single up the middle to as Leah Young and Kelsey Ritter each scored. In the nightcap, Maddie Antone had a walk-off single up the middle to score Dallas King for the 11-3 win.

King tossed a complete game five-hitter allowing no runs with no walks and six strikeouts in 5.0 innings against Hartford. Winthrop posted four runs in the third inning and three runs in the fifth. It was the first victory for King on the year as she's 1-3 and extended her streak of no earned runs to 17.2.

K.J. Uyeno set the table in the third as she singled to second and beat the throw for her first collegiate base hit. Paige Haley followed with a bunt to move Uyeno over but the bunt was in a good spot and Haley beat the throw to put runners on first and second with no outs. A few batters later, Ritter plated Uyeno on a bases loaded sacrifice fly as the centerfielder caught the ball near the top of the fence in center. Young followed with a triple to right center, scoring both Antone and Haley. Noble added an RBI single to make it 5-0.

The fifth inning started with an Antone single followed by a Ritter double. Young then singled to second, scoring Antone, and stole second to put two runners in scoring position. That set the stage for Noble, who ripped a ball up the middle to end the game.

Bianca Ross took the loss for Hartford after allowing eight runs on 10 hits with no walks and a strikeout in 4.0 innings.  

In the win over Austin Peay, The Eagles broke a 1-1 tie in the third inning as Antone doubled to right and then scored as Ritter tripled off the wall in right. Young followed with a single to short, scoring Ritter, and then stole second. Noble followed with a pinch-hit single off the pitcher and then advance to second on an errant throw by the second baseman that allowed Young to score to make it 4-1.

Austin Peay made it a one-run game in the top of the fourth as Christiana Gable provided a two-run single to left.

Winthrop responded quickly making it a 7-3 game in the bottom of the fourth as Ritter had an RBI double and then Antone and Ritter scored on an error by the second baseman.

Sutton Watson tossed 3.0 innings against the Lady Govs as she allowed one unearned run on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts to improve to 2-3 on the year.

Sindney Hooper took the loss for Austin Peay as she falls to 0-2 after allowing 11 runs (eight earned) on 14 hits with five walks and a strikeout.

Ritter, Young and Antone each finished with four hits on the day. Young drove in five while Ritter and Noble each drove in four. Haley extended her hitting streak to six games and has now reached base in 11 straight games. Antone also scored five runs on the day while Young scored four times. Antone, Noble and Young all have four-game hitting streaks while Ritter has hit safely in five straight.

In addition to batting .472 with 19 runs and 25 hits on the day (nine for extra bases), the Eagles were a perfect 8-for-8 in stolen bases as Young was 5-for-5.
