Eight Eagles Score in Lacrosse's 18-5 Rout Over Kennesaw State Tuesday Afternoon

KENNESAW, GA – Eight Eagles scored goals Tuesday afternoon as the Winthrop lacrosse team dominated the Kennesaw State Owls 18-5 in the squad's season-opener.

Winthrop (1-0) dominated the opening 20 minutes of the contest, getting on the board four minutes in on a free-position goal from Hayley Krause.  After Abigail Blevins made it 2-0, freshman Katie Clark scored her first collegiate goal with 15:49 left in the half.  Fellow freshman Kristen Shriver netted her first collegiate goal less than a minute later. 

Clark made the score 5-0 with her second of the contest with 13:42 on the clock and junior Danielle Ellis netted a goal 39 seconds later.  Blevins grabbed her second tally of the game with 11:44 on the clock then Preseason All-Conference selection junior Shannon Gallagher grabbed back-to-back tallies, giving the Eagles a 9-0 lead.  Kennesaw (0-3) grabbed two goals in the final 4:03 of the half, making the score 9-2 at the break.

Clark and Blevins got the second half started with each tallying their third goals of the game, putting the Eagles up 11-2 less than four minutes into the half.  Danielle Ellis netted goals with 23:05 and 9:38 left while Katherine Judge and Shriver scored between to put Winthrop up 15-3.

Blevins and Clark again scored back-to-back with 5:21 and 2:27 remaining to put the Eagles up 17-4.  Junior Krista Frowein got on the score sheet to cap off Winthrop's scoring with just over a minute to play.

Katie Clark and Abigail Blevins each finished with four goals while Clark also added an assist on the afternoon.  Danielle Ellis netted three goals while Kristen Shriver and Shannon Gallagher each finished with two goals and Gallagher also added two assists.  Katherine Judge led the Eagles with seven ground balls.  Freshman goalie Alaina Girani picked up her first collegiate victory while making five saves.

The Eagles finished with 37 shots to Kennesaw's 15.  Winthrop picked up 20 ground balls and won the battle in the circle, finishing with 15 draw controls.  The Eagles protected the ball well, committing only three turnovers while causing seven.

Winthrop heads home on Friday as the Eagles host Ohio State at 6 p.m. at Eagle Field.  Friday's contest starts a string of six straight home contests.
