Williams And Kilpatrick Combine For 46 Points And 22 Rebounds In 81-62 Win Over GWU

Eagles Turn In Best Offensive Performance Of The Season

ROCK HILL, SC—Erica Williams and Aliyah Kilpatrick combined for 46 points to lead the Winthrop women to an 81-62 Big South Conference victory over Gardner-Webb on Saturday afternoon in the Winthrop Coliseum.

Both Williams and Kilpatrick finished the game with double-doubles while the Eagles turned in a season-high scoring performance.  Williams scored a season-high 24 points and pulled down 10 rebounds while Kilpatrick had a season-high 22 points and a career-best 12 rebounds. Jimecheia Banks and Arianne Whitaker were also in double figures with 11 points each.  Gardner-Webb's Candace Brown tied Williams for game-high scoring honors with 24 while Alexus Hill had 16 and Olivia Parker chipped in with 12.

The win improves Winthrop to 2-6 overall and evens its BSC record at 1-1 while GWU, which was coming off a Wednesday night win over preseason league favorite Liberty, drops to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

"I am very proud of this team," said Winthrop head coach Kevin Cook.  "They prepared very well for GWU.  We only turned it over four times against constant pressure by a Gardner-Webb team that has some big wins this year.  I hope this game will help us turn the corner."

The Eagles turned in their best shooting performance of the year, finishing at 42 percent on 32 of 76 field goals.  Defensively, Winthrop limited GWU to 37.5 percent (24 of 64) and held the Bulldogs to just 2 of 18 from behind the 3-point line.

Williams, who recorded her 25th career double-double, credited her team's poise for the win.  "Coach wrote on the board to stay poised, settle down and play our game.  He said they (GWU) would try to speed us up, get us out of our game and turn us over, but we kept our poise and played our game."  The Bulldogs had forced Liberty into 31 turnovers in their last game, but Winthrop finished with a season-low four turnovers.

After leading by 12 at intermission (39-27), Winthrop extended the advantage to 20 when Williams scored on a layup to make the score 74-54 with 3:28 remaining in the third quarter.  The Eagles led 60-40 after three periods and the lead went to 23 at 68-45 when Kilpatrick connected on a short jumper with 7:11 left in the game.  Gardner-Webb got to within 18 on a baseline jumper by Hill made it 73-55 with 4:16 remaining.

Winthrop had its best start of the season as the Eagles outscored GWU 20-17 after trailing by five just over midway through the first quarter.  Winthrop outscored the Bulldogs 14-6 in the final 4:24 of the quarter. Banks tied the game at 15-15 as she followed up a miss and she then gave Winthrop the lead on a 3-pointer with 54 seconds left in the period.

Kilpatrick scored five quick points in the first two minutes of the second quarter to push the lead to six at 27-21.  The lead increased to 11 when Nuba Jackson's layup put the Eagles ahead 32-21 with 6:34 left in the first half.  Williams converted five of six free throws and Naima Jackson connected on a 16-foot jumper to push the advantage to 14 at 39-25 with 1:36 remaining.  Celia Tibbs scored inside with 1:15 left to make it a 12-point game at intermission.
