Eagles Open Season 3-0 After 80-69 Win Over Jacksonville State Friday Night

ROCK HILL, SC—Junior Joshua Davenport came off the bench for his first career double-double to help lead the Winthrop men's basketball team to an 80-69 victory over Jacksonville State, Friday evening at the Winthrop Coliseum.

The Eagles are off to their first 3-0 start since the 2009-10 season as they look for a fourth straight win on Tuesday, Nov. 24 at 7 p.m. when they travel to Spartanburg, SC to take on USC Upstate. Jacksonville State's record falls to 2-3 overall.

Davenport scored a season-high 12 points and hauled in a career-best 10 rebounds, leading the Eagles to a ninth straight home game and sixth straight over a non-conference opponent. He had eight points and seven rebounds by halftime as he scored his first basket of the game just 13 seconds after subbing in to give the Eagles a six-point advantage. He then scored on a jumper after an offensive rebound with 8:35 left as part of a 10-0 run that put the Eagles ahead 29-16 with just over seven and a half left in the first.

Roderick Perkins' steal that led to his own basket on the other end gave the Eagles a 17-point lead at 61-44 with 11 minutes to play. The Gamecocks battled their way back to within six points twice with less than five minutes to play but the Eagles did a solid job beating the press and making shots down the stretch to earn a second straight win by double-figures.

With 2:44 left the Gamecocks cut the Winthrop lead down to six and looked as if they got a stop, but Winthrop outscored Jacksonville State 8-2 down the stretch starting with a tip-in by Duby Okeke after a missed three from Bjorn Broman.

Sophomore Xavier Cooks led all scorers with 19 points as he also pulled down eight rebounds. In addition to Davenport's 12 points, Jimmy Gavin finished with 13 while Keon Johnson added 12. As a team the Eagles shot 48 percent for the game and held the Gamecocks to 39 percent shooting.

The Eagles hit a season-low six threes after combining for 25 in the first two games, but made up for it getting to the basket and a 38-22 advantage on points in the paint.

Jacksonville State placed four players in double-figures led by Erik Durham's 15 points. Jeremy Watson had 13 points while Malcolm Drumwright and JaQuail Townser each finished with 10 points.
