Eagle Volleyball To Take On UNC Asheville Thursday Afternoon In Big South Quarterfinals

ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop volleyball team earned the fifth seed in the Big South Conference Tournament and will take on UNC Asheville, the fourth seed, in the quarterfinals Thursday afternoon at 2:30 on the campus of High Point University.

The Eagles finished the regular season with a 7-7 conference record, finishing in sole possession of fifth place.  Asheville recorded an 8-6 Big South mark for the fourth seed.  The two sides met twice in the regular season with Winthrop winning both contests. 

Lourdes Rosario, an All-Freshman Team selection leads the Eagles offensively this season, averaging 3.2 kills per set.  Rosario was joined on the All-Freshman Team by setter Madilyn McCarty who has averaged 10.45 assists per set this year and also landed her a spot as an All-Conference Honorable Mention.

Winthrop has had strong defensive play at the net this season with the duo of Rachel Lenz and Brianna Gray leading the team with 111 and 94 blocks respectively. 

The Bulldogs are led by Second Team selections Christine Lakatos and Madison Vaughn.  Lakatos has averaged 2.66 kills per set while Vaughn has averaged 1.87.  Vaughn also leads the team with a 1.09 blocks per set average.  Katie Davis and Amanda Powers have shared setter duties this season, averaging 6.38 and 5.5 assists per set respectively. 

The winner of Thursday's contest will take on the winner of the match between top-seeded Coastal Carolina and eighth-seeded Charleston Southern.  That semi-final contest will take place Friday at 4:30 p.m. with the championship set for Sunday at 2 p.m.
