EAGLES PASS CENTURY MARK IN SEASON OPENERThe Eagles opened the season with a victory over Hampton and in the process they posted 102 points. After 60 points in the first half it seemed as if they were on the way to the school's record for points in a game against an NCAA Division I opponent, but Winthrop got off to a slow start offensively in the second half. The Eagles managed just three points in the first 8:16 of the second half but despite that they still reached the century mark with 39 points in the final 11:44. It was just the second time an Eagles team scored 100 or more points in the season opener. The 1989-90 team started the season with an 103-73 victory over Averett College.
THE MATCHUPWinthrop scored 102 points in the opener behind 13 made threes and 27 free throws made. The Eagles were beat on the glass 52-33, but shot 53 percent from the floor. The Eagles proved to be balanced offensively with five players in double-figures and two players with more than 20 points. The Bears are coming off an 82-76 loss to Morris College. Both of their victories on the season have been by a single-point.
DRILLING THREESThe Eagles came out in their season opener knocking down three-point shots left and right. The team made four of the first six three-point attempts. Freshman
Bjorn Broman knocked down the team's first two attempts as the Eagles finished with nine in the first half and 13 total for the game. The 13 threes were tied for the second highest threes made in a game during head coach
Pat Kelsey's tenure.
Jimmy Gavin finished 5-for-5 from behind the arc and sophomore
Xavier Cooks matched his season total from 2014-15 with three in the game (3-for-6).
