Lenz, Eiriksdottir Lead Volleyball To 3-0 Victory Over Presbyterian on Senior Night Friday

ROCK HILL, SC – Seniors Rachel Lenz and Hjordis Eiriksdottir had strong performances Friday evening to help propel the Winthrop volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep of Presbyterian on Senior Night.

With the victory, Winthrop finishes the regular season with a 13-17 overall record and a 7-7 mark in the Big South while Presbyterian falls to 4-24 overall and 2-12 in the conference. 

Lenz had a strong outing on both sides of the ball as she posted seven kills and a .600 attack percentage to go along with six blocks.  Eiriksdottir tied for the team lead with nine kills along with Nikki Drost.  Madilyn McCarty finished with 34 assists while Carlie Skelton led the team with 11 digs.

Winthrop took an early 7-3 lead in the first set, but Presbyterian was able to hang around and trailed by only two at 9-7.  The Eagles responded with an 8-2 run, opening a 17-9 edge.  The Blue Hose were able to get back within three, but no closer as the Eagles took the first set 25-17.

The Eagles again grabbed the early edge in the second set only to Presbyterian fight back to get within two at 15-13.  Winthrop then went on a 5-0 run, taking a 20-13 lead and winning the second set 25-20.

Winthrop built itself a big lead in the third set, going up by as much as 11 at 16-5.  Presbyterian did rally slightly to get within six at 19-13, but couldn't get any more as the Eagles took the final set 25-15.

The Eagles will now await the seedings to be announced by the Big South Conference for the upcoming conference tournament.  Tournament play begins on Thursday and will be hosted in its entirety by High Point University.
