ROCK HILL, SC—The top-seeded Winthrop men's soccer team advanced to the Big South Conference Tournament semifinals with a 3-0 win eighth-seeded UNC Asheville, Tuesday evening at Manchester Meadows.
The win is the third straight for the Eagles as they improve to 10-6-1 on the year while the Bulldogs end their season at 6-12-1. Winthrop will take on fourth-seeded Campbell on Friday, Nov. 13 at 4 p.m. in the semifinals. The semifinals and final will be held at Bryan Park in Greensboro, NC.
Senior
Patrick Barnes scored the game's first goal in the 19
th minute.
Max Hasenstab delivered a corner kick that made its way through traffic and after a couple of bounces Barnes ran on and struck the ball with his left foot first time and ripped a shot into the right corner of the goal. That gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead at the half.
Winthrop came out applying pressure offensively early on in the second half and broke through in the 49
th minute. Hasenstab served another corner right to
Magnus Thorsson, who struck the ball first time. The shot hit a defender, came back to Thorsson and he smashed the rebound into the goal.
Hasenstab added an insurance goal in the 80
th minute when Barnes set him free toward goal and he ripped a shot that hit the side of the goalkeeper and found its way into the side netting for his 10
th on the year.
Winthrop finished with a 14-12 advantage in shots and 7-4 on corner kicks.
Fabian Broich made two saves to earn his second straight shutout and fifth of the season. Asheville's Zak Davis finished the game with four saves.
This will be the Eagles 15
th appearance in the semifinals of the Big South Conference Tournament under Posipanko and 20th appearance for the program.
