Women’s Soccer Team Drops Hard Fought 2-0 Loss to Liberty in Conference Tournament Quarterfinals

Box Score LYNCHBURG, VA—The No. 8 seeded Winthrop Lady Eagles' soccer squad fell 2-0 at No.1 seed Liberty Sunday afternoon in the Big South Conference Tournament Quarterfinals.

Both teams came out battling hard in the first half.  For the first 15 minutes of the match it was a defensive battle as only one shot was attempted by either team.  After a foul was called in the 17th minute against the Lady Eagles, Liberty's Brittany Aanderud sent the free kick towards goal but goalkeeper Karly Gustafson was there for the first save of the match.

Winthrop responded in the 27th minute when Macey Bosley fired a pair of shots of her own, firing high on both.  Liberty nearly took the 1-0 lead in the 30th minute when a ball slipped inside the box but again Gustafson was there to make a sliding save just before the ball crossed the line.

The half ended at a 0-0 deadlock with Liberty outshooting Winthrop 7-4.  Gustafson compiled four saves throughout the first half.

Liberty opened up the game in the 51st minute when Crystal Elmers curved a ball in the upper right corner sneaking it past Gustafson for the 1-0 lead.  She was assisted on the goal by Jaime Bouffard.  Liberty continued to apply pressure and stretch the lead but Gustafson kept Winthrop in the match with several key saves.

With time winding down in the match and the season on the line, the Lady Eagles continued to press further up the pitch as Liberty attempted to play possession and hold its 1-0 lead.  This worked against Winthrop as Liberty was able to extend its lead on a counter attack in the 79th minute when Amanda Barrett sent one in the back of the net, assisted by Jennifer Knoebel.

The Lady Eagles continued to compete hard but couldn't get past Liberty's defense.  Gustafson finished the match with eight saves.

Winthrop concludes its 2015 season with a 6-9-3 (3-5-2 BSC) overall record.
