Rosario's Career-High 23 Kills Leads Winthrop Volleyball To 3-1 Victory Over UNC Asheville Friday

ROCK HILL, SC – Freshman Lourdes Rosario notched a career-high 23 kills Friday to lead the Winthrop volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over the UNC Asheville Bulldogs.

The victory, the fourth straight for the Eagles, improved Winthrop's record to 8-11 overall and 3-1 in the conference while Asheville fell to 9-7 overall and 2-2 in the Big South.

Rosario totaled 23 kills on 49 total attacks with a .286 attack percentage and also posted seven digs and three blocks.  Nikki Drost added 16 kills while Emma Weakland notched 11.  Madilyn McCarty notched a double-double with 52 assists and 11 digs while Maria Volstand led the team with 19 digs.

The early part of the opening set was a back-and-forth battle but the Eagles used a 9-3 run to turn a one-point lead into a seven-point advantage en route to taking the first set 25-18.  In the second set, Winthrop again used a big run to pull away from the Bulldogs.  In an 8-8 tie, the Eagles went on a 14-4 run to take a 22-12 lead, winning the second set 25-16.

Asheville didn't allow the Eagles roll through in straight sets as the Bulldogs won the third set in convincing fashion, 25-17.  The Bulldogs rode some momentum into the fourth set as the two teams battled back and forth with 12 tied scores and three lead changes.  The two sides were tied 17-17 before the Eagles went on a 6-1 run, taking a 23-18 lead and winning the fourth set 25-20.

Winthrop finished with 66 kills on the night with a .277 attack percentage.  The Eagles totaled 60 assists, 65 digs and five team blocks.

The Eagles will continue on the road Saturday, heading to Boiling Springs, NC to take on the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs at 2 p.m.
