Volleyball Travels to UNC Asheville and Gardner-Webb For Conference Contests This Weekend

ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop volleyball team hits the road this weekend for two conference contests at UNC Asheville Friday and Gardner-Webb Saturday.

LAST WEEKEND

Winthrop picked up a road conference victory last Friday in a three-set win over the Presbyterian College Blue Hose.  Freshmen Lourdes Rosario and Madilyn McCarty each earned Big South weekly honors Monday.  Rosario was tabbed as the Player of the Week while McCarty earned the Freshman of the Week award for the second time this season.

ABOUT UNC ASHEVILLE

The UNC Asheville Bulldogs are 9-6 on the season and have a 2-1 mark in the Big South.  Asheville is coming off a five-set loss at Liberty on Saturday, having previously downed Gardner-Webb and Radford in conference.  Senior Christine Lakatos leads the team with 136 kills, averaging 2.5 per set.  Amanda Powers and Katie Davis are the team's primary setters, totaling 319 and 240 assists respectively. 

ABOUT GARDNER-WEBB

Gardner-Webb is 4-14 on the season and winless through three conference contests.  The Bulldogs have lost seven straight matches and haven't won since September 12.  Senior Tyra Montour leads Gardner-Webb offensively with 145 kills, an average of 2.5 per set.  Justine Bowers in the team's primary setter, averaging just over seven assists per set. 

SERIES HISTORIES

Winthrop holds a 38-26 lead in the series against UNC Asheville but has seen the Bulldogs come on strong in the last few years.  The Eagles have dominated the series against Gardner-Webb having only, fallen twice in 24 total matches.

UP NEXT

The Eagles will again have the mid-week free of contests before hitting the road next weekend for contests against High Point and Campbell.
