Thorsson Nets Game-Winner In 2OT Again As Eagles Slip Past Gardner-Webb Wednesday Night

Thorsson, Hasenstab Lead Eagles With Two Goals Each

BOILING SPRINGS, NC—For the second straight game, senior Magnus Thorsson netted the golden goal as his header lifted Winthrop to a 4-3 win at Gardner-Webb in double overtime, Wednesday evening in Big South Conference men's soccer action.

The victory is the third straight for the Eagles, who improve to 4-5 on the year and 2-0 in the league. Gardner-Webb falls to 1-9 overall and 0-2 in the Big South. Winthrop will look for its fourth straight win on Saturday, Oct. 10 when it hosts Presbyterian College at 2 p.m.

Junior Pietro Bottari took a free kick from the left side of the field about 40 yards out from goal as it was served to the back post where Thorsson leaped from about eight yards out and headed the ball back toward the left side of the goal and into the net for his second of the game and third of the season.

With the Eagles trailing 3-2 with less than 10 minutes to play, Thorsson came through as he positioned himself at the back post and buried a pass played in by Max Hasenstab to tie the match in the 87th minute.

Gardner-Webb grabbed the lead in the 79th minute when they scored on their second counter attack goal of the game as Marvin Mendy drew the Winthrop defender as he neared the top of the 18-yard box and laid a pass off to Jilla Sami who placed a shot into the back of the net for the 3-2 advantage.

Winthrop got caught sleeping defensively early on in the second half when Mendy dribbled into the box on a counter attack and then dribbled by Winthrop goalie Fabian Broich and slotted the ball into the net for the 2-1 lead.

Junior Max Hasenstab wasted no time getting the match tied up as he scored just shy of three minutes later when he ripped a shot from around the top of the box into the far left corner for his fifth of the season.

After a stagnant first 25 minutes of the match, but then in the 27th minute Hasenstab put the Eagles in front with his fourth goal of the season. Hasenstab was set up in the box on Marco Gatzke's pass that split the defense down the middle of the field and Hasenstab took a touch to set up his left foot in the box and placed the ball into the net.

Gardner-Webb tied the match in the 35th minute as Frej Ramberg served a corner kick near the spot and Nathan Rose flicked the ball with his head to the back post where Jascha Gluckschalt struck the ball first time and beat Broich low for his first of the season.

The Eagles had a great chance to grab the lead in the final seconds of the first half when the Runnin' Bulldogs turned the ball over and Hasenstab made his way into the box with space but as he approached the goalie he placed a square ball to Jordan Stoddart who had an open goal to look at but he didn't get a clean shot off and the ball bounced toward a defender and was cleared as time expired.

Broich finished the game with three saves in the game while his counterpart William Liles made six saves. Winthrop finished with a 27-11 advantage in shots and 11-5 in shots on goal.
