Box Score High Point, NC--The Winthrop women's soccer team fell to the High Point Panthers 2-0 Saturday night at Vert Stadium.
It was a slow start to the night for both teams. The majority of the first half was a battle between each squad trying to maintain possession and find the right touch. High Point fired a flurry of shots forcing goalkeeper
Caroline Duncan to make two early saves, one in the 12
th and another in the 15
th minute. Other than another High Point shot off target, these were the only shots in the first half.
Early in the second half the Panthers had their first legit chance to score and capitalized. High Point's Bri Jean-Charles scored off a corner kick assisted by Taylor Romano in the 49
th minute to take the 1-0 lead. Moments later High Point was able to extend their lead to 2-0 in the 52
nd minute when Kelsey Perrell scored off a counter attack assisted by Jean-Charles.
Winthrop tried to respond less than a minute later when
Lauren Watts headed on towards goal forcing High Point's goalkeeper Alex Persiani to make a save. High Point's defense and home field advantage proved to be too much for the Lady Eagles to overcome. Winthrop was out-shot 15-3 and Duncan compiled five saves. She is now 3-2-1 as a starter in between the posts.
Winthrop, 4-5-2 (1-2-1 BSC), will continue their road trip when they travel to face Coastal Carolina next Friday night beginning at 6:00 pm at CCU Soccer Stadium in Conway, SC.
