ROCK HILL, SC – Nikki Drost notched her second double-double of the season Friday to lead the Winthrop volleyball team to a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over the Radford Highlanders inside the Winthrop Coliseum.
Winthrop (9-14, 4-4) took the early lead in the first set and opened it to as much as six at 18-12. Radford came storming back on an 11-3 run, taking a 23-21 edge. The Eagles fought off a couple set points before the Highlanders were finally able to put two points together, taking the opening set 28-26.
The second set again saw the Eagles get out to the early advantage only to see the Highlanders rally. Radford battled back from a five-point deficit to take a 17-15 lead. Winthrop took five of the next six points to take a 20-18 lead and win the second set 25-23.
Radford (9-12, 2-6) came out stronger in the third set, getting out to a 14-8 lead. Winthrop battled back on a 7-3 run to get back within two at 17-15 but couldn't get any closer as Radford took the third set 25-20.
The fourth set was a close back-and-forth battle with neither side able to pull away by more than two points before Winthrop was able to grab a 21-17 edge. Radford fought back to tie the set at 22-22 but Winthrop was able to fight off two match points en route to taking the fourth set 28-26.
Winthrop pulled away with an early 4-1 lead in the fifth set but Radford fought back to tie the match at 5-5. The two teams then started trading points with neither team leading by more than one before the Eagles were able to take the set 17-15.
Nikki Drost finished with 19 kills and 16 digs. Emma Weakland also added 17 kills. Madilyn McCarty finished with 60 assists and Mallary McFadden led the Eagles with 29 digs.
The Eagles will return to the court on Saturday at 4 p.m. as they host the Liberty Flames.
