Smith, Moore Fuel Comeback Victory Over Campbell Saturday Afternoon

Eagles Earn Program's 600th All-Time Win

ROCK HILL, SC— Senior Andre Smith scored 18 of his game-high 23 points in the second half to spark a comeback in a 71-63 victory over Campbell, Saturday afternoon at the Winthrop Coliseum.

The victory was the 600th all-time for the Winthrop men's basketball program as the Eagles improved to 10-9 on the year and 5-3 in the Big South. Campbell falls to 7-14 on the year and 1-7 in the league. Winthrop will be back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 28 when it travels to Conway, SC to take on Coastal Carolina at 7 p.m.

Winthrop trailed for the first 26 minutes of the game but stuck around and Smith ignited the rally with an and-one that started a 10-run. Smith's three-point play made it a one-point game and then Smith found Keon Moore open in the corner for a three-pointer that gave the Eagles their first lead of the game at 46-44 with 13:17 to play. Smith then scored on back-to-back possessions as each time he drove the lane and scored tough baskets in traffic.

The 10-0 run turned into a 17-5 run that put the Eagles up 57-48 with 8:44 remaining. Smith scored nine points during the run and assisted on two other baskets, both threes from Moore.

Campbell did work its way back to within three points at 62-59 with 2:27 to play in the game after an Andre Ryan three, but it was Smith again that stepped up as he buried a three to answer and the Eagles held on the rest of the way.

Over the final 14 minutes of the game, Winthrop held the Camels to 29 percent shooting while knocking down 9-of-18 shots, including 4-for-17 from three and all nine free throw attempts. Winthrop finished the game 24-for-30 at the foul line (80 percent).

Smith was one of three Eagles in double-figures as Moore finished with 18 and Keon Johnson added 10 points. Moore also led the team in rebounds with nine. The Eagles finished the game shooting 39 percent (46 percent in second half) as Smith, Moore and Johnson were a combined 16-for-36 from the field.

Ryan tied for the team-lead in points with 14 for Campbell while Reco McCarter had 14 and D.J. Mason added 12. Mason also had four assists and three blocks to lead the Camels in both categories.

The Camels raced out to a 13-2 lead over the first five and a half minutes of the game behind two threes from Ryan. Campbell held the Eagles under 10 points until the 10:09 mark of the first half when Smith knocked down three free throws to make it an eight point game.

A three-pointer by McCarter put the Camels up 27-14 with 7:14 to play for their largest lead of the half. Winthrop responded with a 9-0 run that started with a four-play play from Moore, who was fouled while knocking down a three in the corner. Johnson cut the deficit to five points during the run with a three-pointer from the wing during the run.

The Eagles closed the gap to three points at the break, 33-30, as the last basket of the half went to Duby Okeke as he boarded a miss and then dunked the ball with 30 seconds left. Winthrop shot 32 percent from the floor and was just 3-for-12 behind the arc in the first half. Campbell knocked down 41 percent of its shots from the floor and was 5-for-13 from three.
