ROCK HILL, SC- Senior
Krystyna Freda scored four goals to become the Big South Conference All-time leading scorer and lead the Winthrop women's soccer team to a 9-0 victory over Alabama A&M on Saturday. With the win, the Lady Eagles move to 2-2 while the Lady Bulldogs fall to 0-5.
Freda scored her first goal of the game in the 19th minute after getting on the end of a through ball from
Megan David. The Lady Bulldogs silenced Freda for the rest of the first half, but she broke through in the 49th minute after
Tori Davis played Freda over the top off a dead ball and she hit it far post past Oehler. Freda's third and fourth goals came just 33 seconds apart with assists from
Devin Puckett and
Emily Crick who would both go on to score a goal apiece.
Zoe Conover,
Grace Radler and
Taylor Walton rounded out the scoring for Winthrop.
Freda was more excited by her team's performance then her own; "It feels really good to break the record but it feels even better that it was a team effort. We had about six girls score and the fact that we could get our team together was a big accomplishment." Head coach
Spencer Smith agreed, "It is a tremendous accomplishment to do what she has done, but she is trying to grow even more as a player." Freda has now scored 54 goals in her career at Winthrop, one more then the previous record of 53 held by Hilary McKay of UNC Asheville. Freda tied her record for most individual shots taken in a game (12) and the team tied its record of most shots taken in a single game (40) with none of the nine goals being unassisted.
Caroline Duncan and
Amelia Henderson split time in goal with each registering a save. Oehler tallied nine saves in all 90 minutes.
The Eagles will travel to Spartanburg to take on Southern Conference rivals Wofford next Friday night at 6:00 p.m.
