ROCK HILL, SC- The Winthrop women's soccer team will look to finish their final game before conference play on a winning note as they host South Carolina State on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Eagle Field. This is the sixth time the two teams have faced each other with Winthrop leading the series 5-1. The last time the teams met was in 2012, where the Lady Eagles won 2-1 on a game winning goal from
Ashley Herndon in overtime.
Winthrop (2-3) is trying to bounce back from a tough 4-0 loss to Charlotte on Wednesday night. Senior goalkeeper
Amelia Henderson got her first start of the year against Charlotte and played 71 minutes. Seniors
Krystyna Freda and
Devin Puckett continue to lead the team in goals with seven and three, respectively. Freshman
Zoe Conover has the second most minutes on offense (245), second to senior
Grace Radler, and has two goals and two assists.
South Carolina State (1-8) is trying to snap a seven game losing streak with three of the most recent loses coming against Big South opponents Campbell, Presbyterian and High Point. The Lady Bulldogs have been held to just six goals all year, with four coming from seniors Dominique Brown and Breia Pierce. South Carolina State have split time in net between juniors Haley Austin and Katelyn Kern. Austin has given up 15 goals and made 44 saves while Kern has allowed 10 goals and tallied 17 saves.
This is head coach Sandy Burris' first season with the Lady Bulldogs after serving as the assistant coach for five years.
