ROCK HILL, SC--Winthrop scored four second half goals to rally for a 5-3 victory over USC Upstate, Wednesday evening in non-conference men's soccer action.

The victory pushes the Eagles to 4-2 on the year while Upstate falls to 1-3-1. Winthrop will look for a second straight win on Sunday, Sept. 21 when it hosts Brevard College at 6 p.m.

"I thought our performance was very poor tonight and we were very fortunate to pick up a win," said Rich Posipanko, who coached in his 500th game as head coach of Winthrop. "We did not play well in any measurable category. USC Upstate had everything to do with the way we played tonight. They are well coached and out worked much of the game. It was the same type of game we played against them in pre-season last year. We need major improvement in our communication and decision making. I was most disappointed in our poor work rate and lack of effort tonight."

Winthrop trailed 3-2 in the 65th minute when Heiko Allmendinger curved a shot around Hector Fernandez into the top right corner of the goal for Upstate. From there the Eagles scored three unanswered goals to finish off with a two-goal victory. Fernandez was in goal for the Eagles to start the second half after starter Guilherme Avelar was hurt at the end of the first half when he collided with a Spartans' player.

Sophomore Max Hasenstab scored his first goal of the season and picked the perfect time as he headed home a Cody Winter cross to tie the match at 3-3 in the 66th minute. Just over 13 minutes later, junior Jordan Stoddart scored his second of the season as his first touch shot off the cross from Patrick Barnes beat the Upstate goalkeeper low to the near post. Senior Sean Comer added an insurance goal with 32 seconds left in the game when he received a pass from Jordi Lluch, turned and fired a low shot past the keeper.

The Eagles tied the game at 2-2 early on in the second half when freshman Charles Coulson netted his second of the season. Lluch used some quality footwork to dribble through several Upstate players, get into the box and slipped a ball to an open Coulson who slotted it home.

Winthrop trailed 2-1 at the half despite scoring the first goal of the game. The goal only took three minutes and 19 seconds as Magnus Thorsson hammered home his second goal of the season. The goal came just after a Winthrop corner kick was cleared away toward midfield. Cody Winter knocked clear back toward the box as junior Kyle Kennedy headed the ball toward Jordi Lluch who then flicked the ball over the top of the defense and Thorsson ran on ripping a half volley to the top left corner.

The lead was short lived as Upstate tied the match in the 6th minute, less than two minutes later. Joe Brinckwirth served up a corner kick that dropped straight in front of goal and Tucker Beerman ran on and headed the ball home from just inside the six.

The Spartans grabbed the 2-1 lead in the 19th minute when a long ball was played through by an Upstate player and Pietro Bottari chased it down and as the ball came down he tried to head the ball back to Avelar but there was miscommunication and the header went by Avelar and into the net.

Winthrop applied a good amount of pressure offensively after the tying goal and twice had a shot saved by an Upstate player. The first chance to take the lead back came in the ninth minute when a Lluch header off a corner kick was cleared off the line by a player. In the 13th minute Pol Sole received a through ball in the box, dribbled around the goalkeeper and has he let a shot go toward the open net an Upstate defender jumped in the way to keep the game tied.

In the 14th minute Bottari served a ball to the far post that sailed over the goalkeeper's head and the last defender as Hasenstab was open at the back post but misjudged his timing and his attempt to redirect the service toward the open net with his head was wide.
