ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 victory over the Davidson Wildcats Tuesday evening behind its best offensive performance of the season.

With the victory Winthrop improved to 6-6 on the season while Davidson fell to 2-8 overall.

The Eagles hit .353 for the match and were led by senior Alina Sopizhuk who finished with 12 kills and a .500 hitting percentage.  Sophomore Brianna Gray had a strong evening with six kills and a .625 attack percentage.  Freshman Nikki Drost also contributed eight kills. 

Sophomore Kelly Scott led the Eagles with 35 assists and tied for the team lead in blocks with five.  Gray and junior Rachel Lenz each also tallied five blocks.

Davidson took the early 6-3 lead in the opening set only to see Winthrop come storming back on a 7-1 run to take a 10-7 advantage.  The Wildcats battled back to tie the set at 15-15 before Winthrop went on another run, this time a 5-0 spurt, opening a 20-15 edge.  Davidson got back within two at 22-20, but no closer as the Eagles took the first set 25-20.

Winthrop dominated the second set, leading from the opening points.  Davidson trailed by only two at 8-6, but a 5-0 Winthrop run opened a 13-6 Eagle advantage.  The Eagles led by as much as many as 10 points at 21-11 before taking the second set 25-16.

The Eagles played briefly from behind in the third set, trailing 4-3 before a 9-2 run gave Winthrop a 12-6 advantage.  The Eagles were easily able to put the Wildcats away in three, taking the third set 25-15.

The Eagles will be back in action over the weekend when Winthrop travels to Winston-Salem, NC to take part in the Demon Deacon Classic hosted by Wake Forest University.  The Eagles will take on the host Demon Deacons, Elon and Western Carolina.
