COLLEGE PARK, MD— The Winthrop men's basketball team couldn't overcome a 14-4 run midway through the second half by 21
st-ranked Maryland as it fell 82-62, Saturday afternoon at the XFINITY Center.
The Eagles were within six points, trailing 52-46 with 10:57 left, when the Terrapins opened up a 16-point advantage with just a shade under seven minutes to play in the game as Maryland maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way. The loss is the second straight for the Eagles, who fall to 3-4 on the year while Maryland improves to 8-1.
"I think our kids came into here with a mentality like they thought they could win the game," said Winthrop head coach
Pat Kelsey, whose team raced out to an early nine-point lead. "Everyone in that locker room believed it and they didn't back down. They accepted the challenge and I'm proud of them."
Senior
Keon Moore led the Eagles with 20 points while sophomore
Keon Johnson added 18 points as the only two Eagles in double-figures. Moore picked up his second foul with 8:30 to play in the first half and sat out the next eight minutes but still managed his fourth 20-point game of the season as he was 7-for-11 from the field and 4-for-7 from three. Johnson knocked down four threes on his way to his third straight game in double-figures.
Winthrop trailed by five points with 12:27 to play after Moore drained a three, but Maryland came right back with a three of its own as Dion Wiley hit an open three. Moore scored inside off a nice feed from
Xavier Cooks to cut the lead to six with 10:57, which was the point where the game started to get away. The Terps scored from everywhere during the run, but mostly at the foul line where it was 7-for-8 at the line to lead 66-50.
A three-pointer by Johnson followed by a basket inside by
Jarad Scott cut the deficit to 11 with 5:52 to play. Scott was fouled on the play with a chance to make it a 10-point game, but couldn't get the free throw to fall. For the next four and a half minutes it remained a 12-13 point lead for Maryland until it scored the last seven points in the final 1:14 of the game to make it a 20-point advantage.
The obvious difference in the game was at the foul line where the Terrapins did a good job at getting to the line, finishing 29-for-35 (83 percent). Winthrop finished the game 11-for-16 at the foul line. Both teams each had nine threes in the game and finished with just 10 turnovers a piece. Maryland had just one second half turnover after nine first half miscues led to 12 points for the Eagles.
Jake Layman led all scorers with 21 points as he was 11-for-14 at the foul line to lead four players in double-figures for Maryland. Melo Trimble and Richaud Pack each had 16 points while Jared Nickens chipped in with 12 points off the bench.
The Eagles raced out to an early 5-0 lead that forced Maryland to call a timeout as Moore opened up the scoring by knocking down a jumper and then Johnson knocked down a three. The Terrapins came out of the timeout and Nickens drained their first basket with a three-pointer. Winthrop pushed its lead to 13-4 with 12:28 left in the half behind three-pointers from Moore and
Andre Smith.
Maryland chipped away at the Eagles lead and with 9:13 left in the half took its first lead at 16-15 after Pack hit a three. The Pack triple capped off a 12-2 run by the Terps. After the Smith three put Winthrop up by nine, it only knocked down one three over the final 12 and a half minutes of the half, which was a deep three by Johnson to cut the deficit to 31-29 with a little over two minutes remaining until halftime.
The Eagles didn't score over the final two minutes after pulling within a basket and trailed 34-29 at the break as they shot 34 percent from the floor while Maryland shot 44 percent.
Winthrop will look to end its two-game skid on Tuesday, Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. when it hosts Mars Hill.
