st minute lifted Winthrop to a 1-0 victory at 20
th-ranked Radford, Wednesday evening in Big South Conference men's soccer action.
The sophomore forward netted his ninth goal of the season and second game-winner as his persistence paid off on a run into the box. Junior
Magnus Thorsson tried to deliver a cross into the area as a defender seemed to get a foot in front for a deflection that smothered the service to the near post. As Radford goalkeeper Aitor Pouseu Blanco came out to collect it near the top of the six the ball deflected off a defender rolling away from the keeper. Hasenstab continued his initial run and was able to creep between the defender and the goalie and poke the ball into the net from inside the six-yard box.
Winthrop finishes the regular season at 12-4-1 overall and 6-2-1 in the Big South as it captures 12 wins for the first time since 2008. Radford, which will be the number-one seed at next week's Big South Conference Tournament, ends the regular season at 11-4-2 and 8-1 in the league. Winthrop will be in action on Tuesday, Nov. 11 at home but the tournament seeds will not be officially announced until the final games this coming weekend.
"This was a good win versus a very good team," said Winthrop head coach
Rich Posipanko, who now has guided seven teams to 12-plus wins in a season. "I thought our work rate and effort was excellent. It was a game where both teams got after it and could have gone either way. We feel very fortunate to get the win."
Radford got forward plenty of times in the game, but the Eagles' defense positioned itself well and didn't allow the Highlanders to test junior
Fabian Broich as he finished with one save. The Eagles were fortunate to find the back of the net as they had just six shots and two on goal as Pouseu Blanco also finished with just one save.
The shutout is the second on the season for Broich, who has now allowed just one goal in the last 225 minutes as he improves to 4-1 in goal this season.
Winthrop had a great chance to make it 2-0 in the 89
th minute as senior
Pol Sole dribbled his way into open space into the box and then dribbled by the goalie. Sole then saved the ball from going out and turned to make a pass to a wide open
Jordan Stoddart at the top of the six but the ball seemed to jump up on him and he sailed the shot over the bar of the open frame. The miss did not come back to bite the Eagles as the held off the Highlanders in the final minute.
It was the Eagles first win against a nationally-ranked opponent since defeating 10
th-ranked Coastal Carolina 2-1 in overtime of the 2002 Big South Conference Championship Game.
