Looking To End Two-Game Skid, Men's Soccer Travels To Campbell Saturday Night

ROCK HILL, SC— Back-to-back losses have the Winthrop men's soccer team looking to get back on track as it travels to Buies Creek, NC on Saturday, Nov. 1 to take on Campbell at 7 p.m.

The Eagles are coming off a 2-0 loss at 24th-ranked Coastal Carolina as they are now 10-4-1 on the year and 4-2-1 in the Big South Conference. It was just the third time the Eagles have been shutout this season.

Heading into this weekend's action the Eagles are in fourth place of the league standings and trying to hold on for one of the top four spots, which will result in hosting a first-round match in the conference tournament. Campbell is currently sixth but still has a shot at finishing in the top four.

Despite being shut out on Wednesday, the Eagles remain one of the top scoring teams in the country as they are ranked 5th with 2.33 goals per game. Senior Pol Sole leads the team in points with 17 points (6g, 5a) while sophomore Max Hasenstab has worked his way into second on the team in scoring with seven goals and two assists in 10 games played.

Sole had a streak of eight straight games with a point come to an end on Wednesday at Coastal Carolina. In all 15 games this season, he's had a point in 10 games. Hasenstab had a point in the previous two games and four of the last five.

Junior Magnus Thorsson remains third on the team in scoring with five goals and an assist. Junior Jordan Stoddart is fourth in goals with four on the year and freshmen Charles Coulson and Sam Schimdt each have three.

Senior Guilherme Avelar has started the last seven games in goal and has a 5-3-1 mark but was replaced at the half at Coastal Carolina by junior Fabian Broich. Either one could start in net against the Camels.

Campbell enters the game with a 5-9 mark overall and 2-4 in the league. The Camels are coming off a 2-1 home loss to High Point but have won two of their last three matches.

Freshman of the Year candidate Bradley Farias leads the Campbell offense with nine goals and two assists. Sophomore Tunji Osifeso is second on the team in scoring with three goals and two assists.

Redshirt freshman Matthew Mozynski has been in goal for every second of the 2014 season and is 5-9 on the year with a 1.92 goals against average. He's posted two shutouts (first two games of the season). He made nine saves in the 2-1 loss to High Point on Wednesday.

It will be a tough task as the Eagles have not had much success against the Camels over the years. Campbell leads the all-time series 17-2 and the only two Winthrop wins came in 1987. Since Campbell's return to the Big South in in 2011, Winthrop has lost all three meetings and two of them by two or more goals.
