Volleyball Falls 3-0 At Radford Friday Evening

Box Score RADFORD, VA -- The Winthrop volleyball team fell 3 - 0 to the Radford Highlanders Friday evening in Big South action.

Winthrop fell to 15 - 9 overall and 5 - 3 in the conference with the loss. Radford improved to 16 - 7 overall and 6 - 2 in the Big South with the victory.

The first set was close in the early going as Radford held only a slim one-point edge at 15 - 14. The Highlanders then used a quick 5-0 run to open a 20 - 14 lead that the Eagles couldn't overcome falling 25-21 in the opening set.

The first 30 points of the second set was a fierce back-and-forth battle and the two sides were tied at 15 - 15.  Radford again used a quick 5-0 spurt to go up 20-15.  Winthrop was able to cut the deficit to one at 23 - 22 but couldn't get any closer, falling 25 - 23.

In the third set Radford again use a small run to ease away from the Eagles.  Winthrop trailed by five at 16 - 11 but was able to get back within one at 18- 17 but couldn't complete the comeback falling 25 - 19.

Rachel Lenz led the Eagles with eight kills while Alina Sopizhuk and Nikki Drost each recorded seven kills.  Jesse Vicic finished with 20 assists while Maria Volstad totaled 12 digs.

The Eagles will have a quick turn around to play the top-seeded Liberty Flames on Saturday at 1 p.m.
