Box Score ROCK HILL, SC – Three Eagles finished with double-doubles Saturday afternoon as the Winthrop volleyball team downed the Campbell Camels 3-1 in Big South conference action.
Winthrop improved to 15-8 overall and 5-2 in the conference with the victory while Campbell fell to 10-13 overall and 2-5 in the Big South.
Seniors Alina Sopizhuk and Jessie Vicic along with freshman Nikki Drost each tallied double-doubles. Sopizhuk totaled a team-high 13 kills and 17 digs. Vicic finished with 24 assists and 11 digs while Drost tallied 10 kills and a career-high 18 digs. Junior Rachel Lenz also tallied double-digit kills with 12 and had a strong defensive effort with eight total blocks.
The Eagles never trailed in the opening set and used a 5-0 run midway through the set to turn a two-point edge into a seven-point advantage at 15-8. Over the remainder of the set, Campbell was unable to secure more than two points in a row as the Eagles took the first set 25-17.
Winthrop had a very sluggish start to the second set, quickly falling behind 5-0. The Eagles were able to stay within striking distance and still trailing by five at 14-9, went on a 10-4 run to take their first lead of the set at 19-18.
After a Campbell timeout, the Camels went on a 6-2 run to reach set point at 24-21. The Eagles fought off three straight set points to tie the set at 24-24 but couldn't complete the comeback as Campbell took the final two points to win the second set 26-24.
The Eagles had a much stronger start to the third set, jumping out to an 8-3 lead before Campbell took a timeout. The Camels remained within five at 14-9 before a 4-0 Eagle run opened an 18-9 advantage forcing Campbell to take its second timeout. Campbell was unable to make any substantial run against Winthrop as the Eagles went on for the 25-17 third-set victory.
The two squads went back and forth in the early part of the fourth set as Campbell took the early 6-2 lead. The Camels continued to hold a slim two-point edge at 8-6 before the Eagles went on a big 9-1 run take a 15-9 advantage. Campbell was able to fight back to within three at 19-16 but couldn't get any closer as the Eagles took the fourth set 25-19.
The Eagles finished with 56 and a .234 attack percentage for the match. Winthrop totaled 50 assists, seven service aces, 75 digs and 10 total team blocks. Defensively the Eagles limited the Camels to only a .123 attack percentage.
Winthrop will continue with conference play next weekend on the road. The Eagles will face Radford on Friday and Liberty on Saturday.
