Eagles Look To Continue Strong Conference Start Against High Point and Campbell

ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop volleyball team closes out its six-match home stand this weekend, hosting the High Point Panthers Friday and Campbell Camels Saturday.

The Eagles are coming off back-to-back 3-1 victories over UNC Asheville and Gardner-Webb last weekend and currently sit at 4-1 in the conference and 14-7 overall.

Senior Alina Sopizhuk leads the Eagles and is eighth in the conference, averaging 3.17 kills per set.  Junior Rachel Lenz continues to lead the Big South in blocking, averaging 1.33 blocks per set and is currently ranked fourth in the NCAA with 109 total blocks. 

Friday evening at 7 p.m. the Eagles will host the High Point Panthers.  High Point enters the weekend with a 7-11 overall record and a 1-4 mark in the Big South.  The Panthers lone conference victory came in a sweep of Charleston Southern.

The Panthers have been led offensively by seniors Kristin Heldt and Chelsea Davis who have totaled 228 and 203 kills respectively.  Junior Gabi Mirand is the team's primary setter, averaging just over 10 assists per set.

The Campbell Camels come to the Winthrop Coliseum for a 2 p.m. contest on Saturday.  Campbell enters the weekend with a 10-11 overall record and a 2-3 record in the Big South and will play at Presbyterian on Friday.

Campbell averages just shy of 12 kills per set and is led by juniors Alexis Hein and Katelyn Layden who have totaled 207 and 199 kills respectively this season.  Defensively, the Camels rank second in the Big South with 16.3 digs per set and are led by junior Mary Crema who averages 4.57 digs per set.

Following the pair of home matches, the Eagles will head on the road next weekend on a trip to Virginia to take on the Liberty Flames and the Radford Highlanders.
