Women's Soccer Drops Road Opener 2-0 at ETSU

Box Score

ROCK HILL, SC- The Winthrop women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss against East Tennessee State Friday night. The loss was the first of the year for the Lady Eagles as they move to 2-1 this season. The win brings the Bucs record to 2-3.

Winthrop went down in the 24th minute when junior midfielder Emilee Engelhaupt put away a pass from sophomore Sarah Zadrazil. The Lady Eagles held the Bucs to one goal for 41 minutes until Forward Kristi Davis finished her first goal of the year. Davis slotted home a pass from Forward Jasmine Dutton. Zadrazil and midfielder Jenny Poltl had the most shots for the Bucs with six each.

There was no shortage of opportunities for Winthrop who registered 17 shots in 90 minutes. Junior Grace Radler led the team with five shots, while teammate Krystyna Freda tallied four. Redshirt sophomore Amelia Henderson kept the Lady Eagles in the game earning 12 saves on 21 shots from the Bucs. ETSU Freshman goalkeeper Anna Yancey had five saves on the night.

Head Coach Spencer Smith thought his team created plenty of opportunities for themselves but failed to capitalize. "I thought we played well in spurts against a quality team. We were unfortunate not to score in the first half, and shortly after our opportunity, ETSU scored on their first good chance of the game. We learned a lot from tonight's match and I'm sure tonight will help us become better as we move on in the season."

Winthrop continues its weekend on the road as they take on Alabama A&M this Sunday at 12:00 P.M.
