ROCK HILL, SC-
The Winthrop women's soccer team defeated Gardner-Webb 4-1 and earned its first conference win of the season Wednesday night. Winthrop improves to 5-1-1 this season while Gardner Webb falls to 2-6-1.

Junior Krystyna Freda opened up scoring for Winthrop in the 21st minute, ripping a shot past goalkeeper Amy Schmitt from 18 yards out. It would be the only shot on goal for the Lady Eagles in the first half. Winthrop couldn't hold the lead until halftime, however, as senior Megan Loftin tied up the game with only 4 minute left in the half. Loftin received a pass from sophomore Tara Woelfel, and took a shot from 30 yards just out of the reach of goalkeeper Amelia Henderson.

Both teams came out hard in the second half, but Winthrop would come out on top scoring three goals in a five minute span. Sophomore Taylor Coleman scored first for the Lady Eagles, receiving a pass from defender Lauren Watts inside the box and putting her shot pass a diving Schmitt. Junior Tori Davis would score the last two goals for the Eagles just 13 seconds apart. Davis earned her first goal of the season when her shot went in with 20:24 left in the game. It was shortly followed by a goal from burying a cross flicked on by Freda.

Henderson earned the win for her 90 minutes in goal and registered five saves, while her counterpart, Schmitt made four.

Winthrop returns home to face Longwood this Saturday at Eagle Field. Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
