ROCK HILL, SC-
Despite strong efforts from junior Krystyna Freda and sophomore Taylor Coleman, the Winthrop women's soccer team couldn't push past The Citadel and wound up tying the Lady Bulldogs 2-2 Wednesday night in Charleston, SC.

The game was evenly played with opportunities coming from both teams throughout the game. The Citadel had the first shots on goal with a blocked shot from Mariana Garcia and goalkeeper Amelia Henderson saved a shot from Ruth Leiva. Those were the last real chances for almost 30 minutes until Leiva collected a rebound off a shot from midfielder Ana Mesa. Leiva received the ball, turned, and put the shot past a diving Henderson to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.

Just two minutes later, however, Freda finished a pass from junior Tori Davis from 12 yards out. Freda ran on to the pass on the right side of the 18 yard box and slotted it past goalkeeper Naomi Carter to knot the score.

The Citadel applied the pressure in the opening minutes of the second half, earning four unanswered shots, including a counter attack by Lea Raedle that hit the post. Winthrop pulled ahead when Coleman ripped a shot from 20 yards out over the head of Carter making the score 2-1 with 21 minutes left in the game. Freshman Samantha Prytulak tried to make it a two goal lead with strong shot that hit the cross bar in the 75th minute.

The Lady Eagles couldn't hold the lead as The Citadel tied the game with 8 minutes left. Leiva dribbled the ball down the left side of the field and fed a pass to teammate Mesa who took a shot that beat Henderson. The two best opportunities in overtime came from Freda and freshman Lauren Watts. Watts barely got a touch on a cross but hit it hard enough to force Carter to have to make a diving save. Freda had the last effort of the match when she ran onto a pass from Coleman. She was one on one with Carter and tried slotting it by her, but Carter's quick reflexes made the save.

The Lady Eagles are now 4-1-1 this season while The Citadel moves to 2-3-2. Winthrop opens Big South Conference play next Wednesday when they face Gardner- Webb at 7:00 p.m. in Boiling Springs, NC.
