ROCK HILL, SC—After falling behind early, the Winthrop women's soccer team battled back to defeat Anderson University 5-1 in non-conference action Tuesday evening at Eagle Field.
Anderson opened up the scoring with a goal by Krystal Goss as she controlled the ball straight on from goal about 25 yards out, took a touch and then ripped a shot into the top left corner for a 1-0 lead in the 5
th minute.
The goal seemed to be a wake-up call for the Lady Eagles as they eventually took control of the game soon after. The first goal didn't come as quickly as the Lady Eagles as hoped as they continued to knock on the door with a fair amount of pressure.
Junior
Krystyna Freda finally broke through for the Lady Eagles in the 33
rd minute as she collected her own rebound and tallied her second goal of the season. Just a minute and 27 seconds later Freda added her second of the game as she received a through ball from sophomore
Taylor Coleman and worked her way by the goalkeeper and buried the shot from about 10 yards out. Freda helped make it 3-1 in the 57
th minute as she was on the other end of the goal as her corner kick was hammered home by a one-touch volley from senior
Anna Sammons.
Sophomore
Eden Ralph made it 4-1 in the 69
th minute as her shot from 25 yards out at an angle sailed over Anderson goalkeeper Kaitlyn Neipp into the left side of the goal for her first of the year. Freshman
Baley Jackson completed the scoring with her first collegiate goal as she was set up straight on goal inside the box by junior
Grace Radler and slotted the ball into the lower right corner.
Amelia Henderson made one save as she played all 90 minutes and is now 2-0 on the year. Her counterpart Neipp finished the game with 10 saves as the Lady Eagles totaled 26 shots (15 on goal).
Winthrop's game scheduled for Monday, Sept. 2 against Brevard College has been canceled. The Lady Eagles will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 6 at East Tennessee State at 7 p.m.
