ROCK HILL, SC- The Winthrop women's soccer team opened its season with a 1-0 win over Wofford as junior forward Krystyna Freda, the Big South Conference Preseason Player of the Year, scored the game-winning goal at the 84th minute after burying a loose ball in the box.

The first half opened with both teams looking for goal. Wofford Forward Annika Jansson and Jordan Burke both had shots in the first ten minutes of play. Freda (Somerset, NJ) answered back with a shot and a header that was wide. Both teams continued to battle for the lead and ended the half with Lady Eagle goalkeeper Amelia Henderson (Mt. Pleasant) making a save off of a Wofford free kick.

The intensity carried into the second half with five shots from each team within four minutes of action.. Freda was eventually able to end the scoreless deadlock when she picked up a loose ball around the penalty mark and beat Wofford goalkeeper Kara Boggs with a high shot. Wofford continued to fight with shots coming from Chloe Brackett and a corner kick with two minutes left on the clock. Junior Grace Radler sealed the win for Winthrop when she kicked the ball out of bounds as the clock ran out.

Head Coach Spencer Smith was happy with the way his team opened its season. "I was pleased with our performance; I thought we played hard for 90 minutes. Defensively, I thought we were fairly organized and we did a good job with the back four. It was a good first game to start the season."

Winthrop's next game will be a on Tuesday, August 27 when the Lady Eagles host Anderson University at 7:00 p.m. on Eagle Field.
