ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop women's tennis team finished the season with an 9-0 conference record to garner the Big South Women's Tennis Regular-Season Championship for the third straight year, it was announced today by the League office.
By virtue of its regular season championship, Coach
Cid Carvalho's Eagles earned the No. 1 seed in this week's Big South Women's Tennis Championship which will be held at Winthrop's Memorial Courts, April 17-20.
Coach Andrew Stubbs' men's squad finished its season with a 5-3 conference record and tied Presbyterian for third place, but based on the tiebreaker, the Eagles received the No. 4 seed.
Charleston Southern finished second in the women's standings with an 8-1 record and earned the No. 2 seed. Campbell and Liberty finished league play with identical 6-3 records, but in the tiebreaker procedure the Fighting Camels claimed the No. 3 seed and the Lady Flames landed the No. 4 spot. Coastal Carolina finished fifth with a 5-4 record, while UNC Asheville garnered the No. 6 slot with a 4-5 Conference mark. Both Radford and Gardner-Webb finished the Big South season with a 3-6 record, but the tiebreaker procedure puts the Highlanders in the No. 7 spot and the Runnin' Bulldogs land the No. 8 seed. New Big South member Longwood claimed the No. 9 seed with a 1-8 mark, and Presbyterian College's 0-9 record was good for the No. 10 position.
On the men's side, Coastal claimed the No. 1 seed after winning the regular season title with an 8-0 record. Campbell earned the No. 2 seed with a 6-2 Conference mark.
PC was awarded the No. 3 seed. In the tiebreaker procedure and the Eagles took the No. 4 seed. Defending champion Radford's 4-4 record in League play was good for the No. 5 seed. Gardner-Webb and Liberty finished Big South competition with 3-5 records, but with the tiebreaker procedure, the Runnin' Bulldogs earned the No. 6 position and the Flames landed the No. 7 spot. UNC Asheville picked up the No. 8 seed as it finished with a 2-6 League record, while Longwood rounds out the seeding with its 0-8 record against Conference opponents.
The Big South's tournament champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Men's Tennis Tournament. The Conference Championship schedule is as follows:
