Women's Tennis Week in Review

MIAMI, FL-- The women's tennis team spent the last half of spring break in Miami, FL where they played #20 Purdue on Thursday afternoon and Florida International on Sunday afternoon.  The Lady Eagles lost to Purdue 6-1 and defeated FIU 5-2.  The Lady Eagles played both matches without their No. 1 player, Yasmine Alkema, who suffered a foot injury vs Georgia State on March 9th.  

On Thursday, the Lady Boilermakers beat Winthrop 6-1.  In No. 1 doubles, senior Giovanna Portioli (Curitiba, Brazil) and freshman Alice Garcia (Brasilia, Brazil) lost to the 38th ranked duo of Krisztina Kapitany and Mara Schmidt 4-8.  At No. 2 doubles, freshman Caitlin Cridland (Perth, Austalia) and sophomore Ekin Gunaysu (Ankara, Turkey) lost to Lynda Xepoleas and Daniela Vidal 6-8.  Junior Andressa Garcia (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and freshman Tijana Uzelac (Belgrade, Serbia) lost to Imogen Golder and Gisella Pere 4-8.  

In singles, No. 5 Ekin Gunaysu lost to Imogen Golder 1-6, 0-6.  At No. 2 singles Alice Garcia lost to Mara Schmidt 2-6, 1-6.  Purdue clinched the match when Lynda Xepoleas beat Winthrop's Andressa Garcia lost 3-6, 2-6 at No. 1 singles. Caitlin Cridland lost to Tess Feigenbaum 4-6, 3-6 at No. 4.  Winthrop's lone point came when Tijana Uzelac defeated Gisella Pere 6-1, 7-6 (5) at No.6 singles. At No. 3 singles Giovanna Portioli lost to Daniela Vidal 6-7 (1), 2-6.  

On Sunday, the Lady Eagles defeated FIU 5-2. In doubles play, Giovanna Portioli and Alice Garcia beat Carlotta Orlando and A. Trifunovic 8-4 at No.1.   At No. 2 doubles, Caitlin Cridland and Ekin Gunaysu fell to Rita Maisak and Giulietta Boha 4-8.  No.3 Andressa Garcia and Tijana Uzelac beat Magali Holt and Michelle Sabado 8-6.  

In singles, Andressa Garcia lost to Carlotta Orlando 6-4, 3-6, 0-1 (0) at No. 1. At No. 2, Alice Garcia defeated A. Trifunovic 6-2, 6-3.  At No. 3 singles Giovanna Portioli beat Rita Maisak 6-1, 2-1 (the match was discontinued).  At No. 4 Caitlin Cridland lost 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (5) to Giulietta Boha. At No. 5 singles Ekin Gunaysu beat Magali Holt 6-3, 6-3.  No. 6 singles saw Tijana Uzelac beat Michelle Sabado 6-1, 6-0.

The Lady Eagles have a three game home stand upcoming beginning this Friday, March 22nd vs Liberty at 1:00 pm.  On Saturday, Radford comes into town for a 1:00 pm match.  Winthrop wraps up the home stretch vs Gardner-Webb next Tuesday, March 26th at 2:00 pm.
