Eagle Lacrosse To Play Inaugural Big South Contest Wednesday at Longwood

ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop lacrosse team will play its inaugural conference match Wednesday when the Eagles travel to Farmville, VA for a 5 p.m. contest against the Longwood Lancers.

Winthrop enters Wednesday's contest with a 4-3 overall record, coming off a 17-10 victory over Fresno State in Denver on Friday.

Longwood is currently 4-1 on the season and 1-0 in the Big South.  The Lancers' four wins have come against opponents who combine for a 5-16 overall record.  Longwood fell on Saturday to nationally-ranked Stony Brook 21-3.  Longwood's conference victory came 24-12 over Campbell on February 26.

The contest between the Eagles and Lancers promises to be an offensive-minded affair as the two teams are the top two scoring teams in the Big South.  Longwood has averaged 14.4 goals per game while Winthrop averages 12.86.

Freshman duo Megan Wallenhorst and Shannon Gallagher lead the Big South in total points.  Wallenhorst leads the league with 27 points on 12 goals and 15 assists while Gallagher has 22 points on 18 goals and four assists.  Gallagher is leads the league in total goals and is also second in goals per game, averaging three goals per contest.

Defensively, Camille King had a strong performance against the Fresno State Bulldogs Friday.  After a rough outing against Denver, King rebounded to tally 11 saves and hold Fresno to only two goals in the first half en route to her fourth victory of the season.

Following Wednesday's contest the Eagles will return home to host non-conference opponent Kennesaw State.  Winthrop will face the Owls at 4 p.m. Friday at Eagle Field.
