CHARLOTTE, NC-- The Big South Conference announced weekly honors today for both Men's and Women's Tennis and Alice Garcia (Brasilia, Brazil) was named Crons Brand Freshman of the Week. This is the third straight week that Garcia has been given the honor. Liberty's Nicola Wellman was named Big South Player of the Week.

Garcia was 3-0 this past weekend in her singles matches, playing all matches at No.3 . Garcia defeated Tatiana Illova of NC State 1-6, 6-1, 6-1 on Friday evening. On Saturday afternoon, Garcia defeated Louisville's Manuele Velasquez 7-5, 6-3. On Sunday, Garcia outlasted Michele Stanford of Furman 4-6, 7-6, 1-0 (8).  

In doubles play, Garcia teamed up with Giovanna Portioli (Curitiba, Brazil) at No. 2. Together they defeated Stefanie Villajuan and Mandy Brown of Louisville 8-6 and beat Furman's duo of Amanda Murray and Michele Stanford 8-5.  

Alice Garcia has won six straight singles matches, bringing her overall singles record to 7-3. In doubles, she has played every match with Portioli and together their record is 6-4. They are the only doubles pair on Winthrop's team to have played multiple matches together and have a record above .500.
