CHARLESTON, SC – Senior Jackie Landers recorded a season-high 21 kills as the Winthrop volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 victory over the Charleston Southern Buccaneers Saturday afternoon.
Winthrop improved to 13-11 overall and 4-6 in the conference with the victory while Charleston Southern fell to 6-21 overall and 0-11 in the Big South with the loss.
Landers had a breakout match with her 21 kills and hit .548 for the match with only four errors on 31 attempts. Landers recorded her first double-double of the season with 10 digs as well. Irene Ojukwu also notched a double-double with 12 kills and 14 digs while Rachel Lenz also contributed 12 kills. Jessie Vicic finished with 48 assists.
Winthrop jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the first set but Charleston Southern was able to battle back to get within one at 16-15, but couldn't get any closer. The Eagles then went on a 9-4 run to close the first set, winning 25-19.
The Eagles were able to cruise through the second set. After a quick 5-1 lead Winthrop used an 8-2 run to take a four-point edge into a 17-7 advantage. The Eagles took the second set 25-16.
The third set again saw the Eagles grab an early lead. Charleston Southern fought back to tie the set at 14-14. The teams continued to trade points and after a 21-21 score, the Buccaneers took a slim 23-21 edge. Winthrop came back with a 3-0 run to have match point at 24-23. Charleston Southern fought off one match point, but couldn't hang on long as the Eagles won 26-24.
Winthrop will stay on the road for a Sunday match up against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. The contest is slated to start at 2 p.m.
