ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop volleyball team will round out its regular season Friday evening when the Eagles host the Presbyterian College Blue Hose at 7 p.m.
Friday's contest will also be the team's Senior Day as the Eagles will recognize seniors Irene Ojukwu and Jackie Landers.
Winthrop enters Friday's finale with a 15-12 overall record and a 6-7 conference mark. Presbyterian is 7-6 in the Big South and 9-20 overall.
Friday's matchup will have big implications for conference tournament seeding. With a victory, Winthrop could finish as high as fifth or still as low as eighth after all tiebreakers are exhausted. If the Eagles fall Friday, the highest Winthrop could finish is seventh based on other results.
The Eagles are riding a two-match conference winning streak and a three-game overall winning streak after defeating Gardner-Webb and UNC Asheville last weekend and The Citadel on Tuesday. With the two victories over the weekend, sophomore Rachel Lenz earned Big South Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Presbyterian is coming off a pair of five-set matches over the weekend. The Blue Hose fell to the UNC Asheville Bulldogs Friday night before earning a come-from-behind victory over Gardner-Webb on Saturday.
Winthrop and Presbyterian first met this season back on October 4 in Clinton, SC. The Blue Hose defeated the Eagles in three sets, 21-25, 23-25, 23-25.
The full conference slate of matches this weekend ends Saturday and the conference office will announce the official seedings for the tournament on Sunday. The Big South tournament will be hosted by Presbyterian and starts on Thursday, November 21 with the quarterfinals. The semi-finals will be Friday, November 22 with the championship on Sunday, November 24, broadcast live on ESPN3.
