CHARLESTON, SC – The Winthrop volleyball team picked up a 3-0 victory Tuesday evening over The Citadel Bulldogs in the Eagles' final non-conference contest of the season.
Winthrop improved to 16-12 overall while The Citadel fell to 5-26 on the season.
Senior Jackie Landers led all hitters with 17 kills and added seven digs. Fellow senior Irene Ojukwu also tallied double-digit kills with 12 and hit .429. Jessie Vicic totaled 45 assists while Maria Volstad finished with 18 digs.
The Eagles fell behind 4-1 early in the first set only to go on an 8-1 run to take a 9-5 advantage. Winthrop had little trouble maintaining its edge en route to taking the first set 25-20.
The second set went completely the way of the Eagles. Winthrop took a 10-3 lead and continued to increase its advantage to 17-7. The Citadel got back within four at 18-14, but couldn't get any closer as the Eagles limited the Bulldogs to only one more point to win the second set 25-15.
The third set was much more closely contested. With the score tied at 5-5, the Eagles went on a 6-1 run to open an 11-6 advantage. The Citadel slowly cut down the Winthrop lead and eventually tied the set at 21-21. The Eagles held strong and took four of the final five points to win the third set 25-22.
Winthrop will close out the regular season at home on Friday evening at 7 p.m. against the Presbyterian College Blue Hose. Friday's contest will be senior night and will honor Jackie Landers and Irene Ojukwu.
