ROCK HILL, SC- The Winthrop women's soccer team had four different players score goals in its 4-0 win against Big South opponent VMI Saturday afternoon, with three of the four goals coming off set plays from junior
Krystyna Freda. With the win, the Lady Eagles improve to 7-2-1 on the year and 3-1 in Big South play and the Keydets fall to 2-9 and 0-4 in Big South contests.
The game had a slow start with neither team getting any good scoring opportunities in the first half. Winthrop finally picked up the pace of the game, scoring all four goals in just the first twelve minutes of the second half. The first came when redshirt junior
Kelly Clark put away a header off a Freda corner kick just 40 seconds into the second half. Exactly three minutes later, junior
Devin Puckett got her head on a free kick and placed it just out of the reach of goalkeeper Emily Marbury. Sophomore
Eden Ralph almost repeated Puckett's goal in the 53
rd minute but her header hit the crossbar and was cleared by the Keydets' defense.Â
Taylor Coleman made the score 3-0 when she put away a loose ball in the box that was tipped by Marbury after a corner kick from Freda.
Freda had a chance to get a goal of her own when she stepped up to take a penalty kick but Marbury managed to make the save. Freda finally got on the board with 24 minutes left in the match, when she ripped a shot from 15 yards out passed Marbury. The goal was Freda's 12
th goal of the season and moves into fifth in all-time career goals in the Big South Conference. Â The Keydets continued to fight throughout the game but failed to get a shot off in the second half.
The Lady Eagles return to action next Wednesday at home against UNC- Asheville at 6:00 P.M.
