ROCK HILL, SC- Junior
Krystyna Freda put away two goals to lead the Winthrop women's soccer team past Liberty Wednesday night at Eagle Field. Winthrop improves its record to 11-3-1,7-3 Big South while Liberty drops to 11-5-1, 6-2-1 in the Big South.
Junior
Devin Puckett almost opened up the scoring for the Lady Eagles just 1:25 into the game but her one touch shot was just off target. The rest of the first half was mostly played between the 18 yard lines, but Freda was able to break through Liberty's defense to score her 16
th goal of the season in the 18
th minute. Freda's shot was on an open net after Liberty goalkeeper Holly Van Noord was forced to come out and make a save on a shot from sophomore
Taylor Walton after Walton ran onto a pass from Puckett. Liberty got on the board 20 minutes later, when a cross from Rebecca Smith ended up going over goalkeeper
Amelia Henderson's head and into the goal. Liberty almost made it 2-1 when sophomore Jaime Bouffard took a shot from 18 yards out that Henderson couldn't hold onto, but freshman defender
Lauren Watts was able to shield off Liberty attacker Crystal Elmers and clear the ball.
Liberty seemed to have carried the momentum into the second half and, again, almost put away a loose ball off a save from Henderson but the Winthrop defense stood their ground and was able to clear. In the 53
rd minute, senior
Okina Crawley played a through ball to Freda who was chased down by the Liberty defense. Freda cut the ball back, creating just enough space to get a shot off and put it in the right side netting past Van Noord from 12 yards out. The goal was Freda's 7
th game winning goal of the season and she now ties the single season conference record for game winning goals. The Lady Eagles put the game away with 14 minutes left as sophomore
Taylor Walton was able to take the ball off defender Casey Norris and slot the ball past Van Noord from 18 yards out. Henderson earned the win for the Lady Eagles and made six saves on the night while Van Noord notched two.
The Lady Eagles' season continues this Saturday at 2:00 p.m. against Radford.
