Volleyball Falls 3-0 At High Point Friday

HIGH POINT, NC – The Winthrop volleyball team struggled offensively Friday evening as the Eagles dropped a 3-0 decision on the road to the High Point Panthers.

The Eagles fell to 11-9 overall and 2-4 in the Big South with the loss while High Point improved to 10-11 overall and 4-2 in the conference with the victory.

Winthrop hit -.025 with 20 kills and 22 errors.  The negative hitting percentage was the first for an Eagle squad since August 27, 2010 and the lowest for the program in  more than 10 years.

The Eagles managed only three kills in the first set as High Point jumped out to an 11-2 lead en route to a dominating 25-10 opening-set victory.

Winthrop was able to take a slim lead to start the second set, leading 10-7.  The Panthers then went on a 9-3 run to take a 16-13 advantage.  The Eagles got back within one at 18-17, but no closer as High Point took the second set 25-21. 

High Point grabbed a 7-3 edge to start the third set, but Winthrop was able to go 7-2 run to take a 10-9 lead, but the advantage was short lived.  The Panthers retook a 14-13 lead and had match point at 24-21.  Winthrop was able to fight off two match points before High Point grabbed its last needed point to take the set 25-23. 

Rachel Lenz led the Eagles with eight kills which equaled only the second time all season that an Eagle did not reach double-figure kills.  Jessie Vicic finished with 18 assists and Alina Sopizhuk added seven digs.

Winthrop finishes its six-match road swing on Saturday at 4 p.m. against the Campbell Camels.
