ROCK Hill, SC- Sophomore Taylor Walton scored with a 1:53 left on the clock to help the Winthrop women's soccer team defeat Coastal Carolina Friday night. Coastal Carolina falls to 6-7-1 this season and 3-3 in conference action while the Lady Eagles improve to 9-2-1 and 5-1 in the conference.

Coastal Carolina dominated the first half out shooting the Lady Eagles out ten to three and earning eight corner kicks while Winthrop had none. Sophomore goalkeeper Amelia Henderson made six saves in the first half to keep her team in the game and keep the score 0-0 heading into halftime.

The second half was more evenly matched as the game continued as the game went back and forth from end line to end line. Sophomore Eden Ralph almost broke the deadlock just minutes into the second half when she got on the end of a cross from Devin Puckett, but she couldn't control the ball and it sailed over. Winthrop continued to get good opportunities in the second half, including two free kicks just outside the 18 yard box, but couldn't put one past goalkeeper Megan Spencer. Coastal had their fair share of chances as well, and there best opportunity came from a shot from 30 yards out from Morgan Smith but Henderson managed to get her fingertips on it. The game looked like it was going to overtime but then Taylor Walton managed to put away her fifth goal of the year by applying pressure to Coastal's defense. The ball was cleared over the Chants' defense, Spencer came to gather the ball but couldn't hold on to it and Walton took a touch past her and then passed the ball into an open net. Walton is now tied with Taylor Coleman for most goals this season behind junior Krystyna Freda.

Winthrop will look to continue its four game win streak next Wednesday when it travels to Charleston to take on Charleston Southern at 3:00 p.m.
