ROCK HILL, SC- The Winthrop women's soccer team will head to Conway, SC to go up against rival Coastal Carolina Friday night at 7:00 p.m. The two teams have met twelve times and the series is tied at 6-6.
Winthrop (8-2-1, 4-1 Big South) has to overcome a quick turnaround from their last game, only having 48 hours to prepare after its 1-0 win against UNC Asheville Wednesday night. Junior
Krystyna Freda came through for the Lady Eagles, scoring her 17
th career game winning goal in the 84
th minute. Freda tied the conference record for most career game winning goals and is ranked 1
st in the nation in points per game, averaging 2.8. Freda, with help from sophomore
Taylor Coleman and
Taylor Walton, have rocketed the Winthrop offense to 32 goals, which is not only first in the conference but 4
th in scoring offense in the nation for Division I. The Lady Eagles' defense is also holding its own, led by senior
Megan Pritts and sophomore goalkeeper
Amelia Henderson, only allowing two shots on goal in Wednesday night's contest.
Coastal Carolina (6-6-1, 3-2 Big South) also grabbed a conference win Wednesday when they downed Presbyterian College 4-0. The Chants have had 12 different goal scorers totaling 25 goals, coming in at third in the conference in goals. Freshman Brianna Panico holds the leading scorer position with six goals, followed closely by sophomore FIa Jonsson (4). Goalkeeper Megan Spencer has started all of Coastals' 13 games, allowing an average of only .96 goals per game and earning seven shutouts.
Paul Hogan is in his third season as the Chants' head coach and has earned a record of 18-30-2.
