BUIES CREEK, NC –
Krystyna Freda's game-winning goal in the 98
th minute gave Winthrop a 1-0 win against Campbell University, Sunday afternoon at the Eakes Athletic Complex.
Winthrop improves to 6-4-1 overall and 3-0-1 in Big South Conference play with the win. Campbell drops to 7-3-1 overall and 2-2 in the Big South Conference.
“We showed some heart today,” said head coach
Spencer Smith. “We did not necessarily play our best soccer today, but we kept battling. I was very proud of all our players today.”
With her ninth career game-winning goal, Freda becomes Winthrop's all-time leader in game-winning goals moving her past Chelsea White (05-08) and
Courtney Durbin (08-11). Freda's shot came from the middle of the field just inside the 18 yard-box, flying to the left of the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.
Allie VandeWater was credited with the assist on the play after she received the ball on the left flank about 30 yards from goal before finding Freda in the middle of the field.
In the first period the Lady Eagles had a goal from
Megan David called back on an offside call made by the assistant referee. Winthrop had four first half shots, VandeWater led the way with two shots including her effort in the 16
th minute forcing Campbell goalkeeper Ryann Torrero to make a save. The Camels finished the half with five shots including two from their leading goal scorer Ashley Clark.
Winthrop had to fight off a tough Campbell team in the second half who outshot the Lady Eagles 7-2 in the half. Melissa Messier's shot in the 66
th minute was saved by Henderson.
Sarah Schippers was subbed in for Winthrop in the 77
th minute and the Camels wasted no time testing her. Alexis Prada and Clark each got off shots in the 78
th minute which required saves from Schippers. Then in the 85
th minute Caitlin Schneider's attempt was also stopped by Schippers.
Winthrop did not take its first shot of the half until an 88
th minute shot from Freda went wide. Just a half minute later VandeWater would force another save by Torrero. As the game moved into the overtime period the Lady Eagles picked up their level of aggression. Freda had an attempt saved by Torrero just a minute into overtime.
Devin Puckett and
Megan David also had shot attempts before the game winner in the 98
th minute.
Campbell finished the game with a 14-10 advantage in shots. Freda led Winthrop with four shots on the afternoon, while Clark led all players with six shots. Henderson finished the game with two saves, while Schippers made three saves and picked up the win off the bench. Ryann Torrero finished the afternoon with six saves for the Camels.
Winthrop will return to action at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, October 4, when they travel to Farmville, VA, to take on conference newcomer Longwood at the Longwood Athletics Complex.
