Women’s Soccer Heads To South Carolina State Wednesday Afternoon For Road Opener

Lady Eagles Lead 7-2 In All-Time Series With Bulldogs

ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop women's soccer team will hit the road for the first time this season when it travels to Orangeburg, SC on Wednesday afternoon for a 4:30 p.m. contest with the South Carolina State Bulldogs.

The contest was originally scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., but has been moved to 4:30 p.m. due to construction work being done at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium.

The Lady Eagles will look for their first win of the season after falling 2-1 on Sunday afternoon to Western Carolina at home. Winthrop holds a 7-2 all-time series lead over South Carolina State, including a 3-1 record in Orangeburg with the lone loss coming in 2009 when the Bulldogs won 2-1 in overtime.  Last season, the Lady Eagles recorded a 4-2 win at Eagle Field.

In the match last season, Krystyna Freda scored two goals for Winthrop, including the game-winning goal. Okina Crawley added in her only goal of the season against the Bulldogs, while Sarah Schippers got the win in the net for the Lady Eagles recording one save in the match. Tori Papp returns to the lineup for South Carolina State after scoring a goal in the match last season. Goalkeepers Danielle Murphy and Mariah Hebbe who both played in the matchup last season are also back.

Winthrop enters the match with an 0-1 record, while the Bulldogs enter with a record of 2-1 having out-scored their opponents 10-2 including an 8-0 win against Alabama A&M to open the season. South Carolina State has defeated Emmanuel College, while dropping its last match against North Florida.

Lia Gorden has the lone goal for the Lady Eagles and sophomore Devin Puckett picked up an assist in the season opener.  In goal, Amelia Henderson recorded seven saves in her first career start for Winthrop.

The Bulldogs are lead in scoring by Brooke Contreras and Rhea Anne Currie who have each scored two goals on the season. Six other South Carolina State players each have one goal. Murphy and Hebbe both have a win on the season in the net, while Hebbe has the team lead in saves with four.
