ROCK HILL, SC--Three-time alumna Susan Anfin and her husband, Jim Doyle, have established an athletic endowment to support men's basketball at Winthrop.
The Susan Anfin and Jim Doyle Award will provide scholarship funds to Winthrop's athletic department in support of men's basketball, with first preference given to a player who has demonstrated exemplary grade point average (GPA) improvement. Anfin and Doyle's gift recognizes the tradition of scholar athletes on Winthrop's campus.
Winthrop Athletics was cited in 2010-11 academic year by the Big South Conference for having the highest percentage of student-athletes in the conference who achieved recognition on the prestigious Presidential Honor Roll list. The fall 2011 semester cumulative GPA average of 3.11 for all student-athletes is the highest since such records have been kept.
Anfin, former assistant athletic director for compliance and student services at Winthrop, serves on the Eagle Club Board. She also is a former member of the Winthrop Fund and the Annual Fund Loyalty Council boards. Anfin earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in history at Winthrop in 1986 and 1993, and also earned an MBA degree in 2002 from Winthrop. Doyle is owner and CEO of Retail Sports Marketing in Charlotte, NC. Anfin and Doyle reside in Charlotte.
Anfin noted that she and her husband are avid, longtime Eagles fans, and they see Winthrop as a special place.
“We enjoy the family atmosphere of the games and we look forward to raising our kids and attending games as a family,” Anfin said. “Getting to know the student-athletes has really added to our experiences in the Coliseum as well.”
