KIAWAH ISLAND, SC--The Winthrop women's golf team opened its spring season with a 27th place finish in the 54-hole Kiawah Island Intercollegiate which wrapped up Tuesday.
A total of 33 schools competed in the three-day event which was held on the Cougar Point and Oak Point courses. Augusta State ran away with the team title after firing a 13-over par total of 877 ( 286-296-295). Second place UNC Greensboro finished 22 shots back at 899.
Winthrop shot 953 (329-304-320) to finish 89-over par. The Lady Eagles found themselves in 29th place after the opening round and maintained that standing after two rounds.
Senior
Kayla Cline (Socorro, NM) opened the tournament with an 84, but bounced back to fire rounds of 76 and 74 and tied freshman teammate
Jennifer Dilger (Palmdale, CA) for the low team individual score at 284 which tied them for 63rd place. Dilger shot 81-74-79. Sophomore
Allison Lee (Salisbury, NC) tied for 84th with a 236 (82-74-80). Senior
Katie Bolling (New Brighton, MN) came in 158th after shooting 251 (84-80-87). Rounding out the Winthrop scoring was sophomore
Nicole Mooberry (Norfolk, NE) at 256 (82-87-87) which put her in 168th place.
UNCG's Fanny Cnops captured medalist honors by shooting a 2-under par 214 (72-71-71) to nose out Augusta State's Christine Duschek-Hansen by one shot.
Winthrop will return to action March 9-11 in the Spider Spring Break Invitational in Southport, NC.
