HIGH POINT, NC— Dequesha McClanahan scored 18 points, but the Winthrop women's basketball team's winning streak came to an end at five games in an 81-50 loss at High Point, Monday evening at the Millis Center.
McClanahan led the Eagles in scoring and also added three assists so she is now just two assists away from breaking the Big South Conference single-season mark set by Radford's Stephanie Howard (207).
Winthrop falls to 16-12 on the year and 10-6 in the Big South while High Point improves to 15-11 overall and 11-5 in the league.
The Lady Eagles fell behind by double-figures early as they got off to a slow start and couldn't recover.
Winthrop missed its first 10 shots and was scoreless until McClanahan knocked down a mid-range jumper at the 13:49 mark.
High Point took full advantage of the slow start, scoring 18 points before the Eagles first basket. Erin Reynolds was on fire during the torrid start by the Panthers as she hit six of her first seven shots and had 14 of the team's first 22 points.
After High Point built its 22-2 lead at the 12:38 mark, the team's played level the rest of the way and the Panthers led 39-18 at the break.
Winthrop shot just 23 percent in the first half and committed 13 turnovers. It was tied for the most turnovers in the first half all season, the same number the Eagles had in the first meeting with High Point on Jan. 28. High Point shot 46 percent from the field in the first half and turned Winthrop's miscues into 13 points.
The Lady Eagles finished the game shooting 33 percent and tied a season-high of 24 turnovers. Winthrop did win the battle of the boards, 43-41, but could only convert 21 offensive rebounds into 10 points.
High Point shot 49 percent for the game and scored 30 points off turnovers and 48 points in the paint.
Shamia Brown led the Panthers with 23 points while Reynolds finished with 18 points, four assists and four steals. Cheyenne Parker added 17 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks.
Diana Choibekova was the only other Eagle player in double-figures as she finished with 10 points and just missed a double-double by pulling down nine rebounds.
Winthrop returns home for its final two regular season games against Coastal Carolina and Charleston Southern. The Eagles will face Charleston Southern on Friday, Mar. 2 at 7 p.m. and then play Coastal Carolina on Monday, Mar. 5 at 7 p.m., which will be senior night.
