ROCK HILL, SC—
Winthrop men's basketball looks to end a two-game skid after dropping back-to-back games on the road as it hosts Brevard College, Tuesday evening at the Winthrop Coliseum at 7 p.m.

The Eagles take on NCAA Division II foe Brevard College, which is coming off its first win of the season on Saturday. The Tornados defeated Mars Hill in dramatic fashion with a three-pointer at the buzzer by sophomore Gerel Simmons.

Winthrop is 2-4 on the year and coming off a 71-61 loss at James Madison in which it tried to battle back from a 20-point second half deficit.

The loss overshadowed an impressive offensive performance by sophomore Andre Smith, who dropped in a career-high 26 points on 8-for-13 shooting, 4-for-6 behind the arc and 6-for-7 at the foul line. Smith is now second on the team in scoring at 10.8 points per game.

The Eagles are led in scoring by sophomore Derrick Henry's 16.5 points per game as he has scored in double-figures in five of the first six games. Henry had a tough game shooting at JMU as he was just 3-for-12 from the field and finished with nine points. Henry has been to the foul line in every game, but Saturday's game at JMU was the first game he had not attempted at least five (2-for-2).

Gideon Gamble (R-Sr.) is nearly averaging double-figures at 9.2 points per game and coming off a 13-point performance at JMU. Gamble was 6-for-11 from the field and also had two steals. He started the first four games of the season, but has provided some offense off the bench the last two games with seven points and 13 points (10.0 average) and is 9-for-19 shooting.

Winthrop is putting a 30-game win streak on the line against Non-D1 opponents with the last loss coming in 1997 with a 79-77 loss at home to Anderson College.

This will be the first time that Winthrop and Brevard College face each other in men's hoops.

The Tornados are 1-5 on the year and are 0-1 against NCAA Division I opponents having lost 81-53 at Radford on Nov. 21. They are scoring 65.5 points per game and allowing 81.2 points per game on the year. In three road games Brevard College is averaging just 59 points, but they did score 91 points in their last game.

Like the Eagles, Brevard College sports a young starting line-up with three freshmen, a sophomore and a redshirt junior.

Dominique Pickett is the team's leading scorer as the junior is scoring 18.5 points per game and is also pulling down 5.2 boards. In addition to scoring, Pickett dishes out 4.2 assists per game. In Saturday's win, Pickett had 24 points, nine assists, six rebounds and three steals in 39 minutes.

Simmons, who hit the game-winning shot against Mars Hill, scored 22 points and is third on the team in scoring at 10.2 points per game. The team's second leading scorer is freshman Manzey Miller, who is averaging 11.8 points and 4.7 rebounds while shooting 42 percent.

Of the Tornados six games, two of them have been decided by single-digits and they are 1-1 in those games.

Winthrop has yet to play a game this season decided by fewer than 10 points.

After taking on Brevard, the Eagles will be off for 10 days and will return to action on Dec. 15 at Ohio University for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
