Women’s Soccer Set For Showdown With Radford In Big South Championship Game

The Lady Eagles Are Looking For Their First Ever Birth In The NCAA Tournament

The Winthrop women's soccer team is looking for its first ever birth in the NCAA Tournament in a faceoff with the Radford Highlanders on Sunday, November 4 at 2 p.m. in the championship game of the Big South Conference Tournament at Eagle Field.  The game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.

The Lady Eagles are 12-6-2 on the season and the number four seed, while Radford enters the championship game with a record of 13-2-4 as the number two seed.

Radford holds the all-time series lead over the Lady Eagles 5-4-1.  Earlier this season in Rock Hill, the two teams played to a 1-1 draw.  Krystyna Freda had the lone goal for Winthrop, while Tyler Drake's 88th minute goal allowed Radford to escape with a draw.

Winthrop will face a tough defensive opponent in Radford who boasts the Big South Defensive Player of the Year in goalkeeper Che' Brown.  The matchup will be a classic battle as Freda was named the Big South Attacking Player of the Year.  Statistically, Winthrop's offense is ranked 20th in the nation with 2.32 goals per game and Radford's defense is ranked 18th in the nation with a goals against average of 0.631 and is number five in the nation in shutout percentage at 0.667.

Winthrop's defense has been stout in the team's five -game winning streak, allowing only one goal and earning four shutouts in that span.  Goalkeepers Amelia Henderson and Sarah Schippers have shared the duties in each of those games.  On the season, Henderson has a goals against average of 1.26, while Schippers brings a 0.59 GAA into the contest.  Center back Megan Pritts was named to the Second Team All-Big South Conference and provides leadership in the back.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Krystyna Freda (So., F):  Freda was named the Big South Attacking Player of the Year.  She has 14 goals on the season which ranks 20th in the nation, while her 34 points ranks 22nd in the nation.

Grace Radler (So., MF):  Radler has a Winthrop single season record with 12 assists on the season which is enough for second best in the nation.  Radler earned Second Team All-Big South honors in her sophomore campaign.

Megan Pritts (Jr., D):  Pritts was name Second Team All-Big South Conference for her work in the back for the Lady Eagles.  Her presence has been key in Winthrop three consecutive shutouts entering the Big South championship game.

Che' Brown (Jr., GK):  Brown was named the Big South Defensive Player of the Week and is Radford's all-time leader in shutouts.
