ROCK HILL, SC--
The Eagles look to erase a tough road loss at Indiana State on Tuesday as they take on Virginia Commonwealth, ranked 26th in the country.

Winthrop (1-1) struggled from the field all game but defended well at times and were unable to take advantage of a few scoring lulls by Indiana State.

This will be just the second meeting between Winthrop and VCU. The only other meeting came in 2010 in Winston-Salem, NC at the NIT Season Tip-Off. VCU prevailed 67-54.

Senior Gideon Gamble had the best game of his career in that matchup, finishing with 20 points as he was 7-for-12 from the field and 4-for-7 behind the arc.

Derrick Henry has stepped up early this season to be the leading scorer for the Eagles, averaging 20.5 points per game on 46 percent shooting from the field. Henry has also been able to get to the foul line (19) and is coming off a game in which he was 5-for-5 from the line.

Andre Smith and Gamble are averaging 10.5 points per game. Smith is shooting just 35 percent from the floor, but is knocking down 46 percent of his shots behind the arc (5-for-11). Gamble is off to a good start shooting the ball at 47 percent, but is off to a slow start from three (1-for-7).

As a team, the Eagles have been very balanced rebounding the ball with five players averaging four or more rebounds a game. Larry Brown leads the team in rebounding at 8.0 per game and Henry is second at 6.0 per game.

VCU also enters the game off a loss after falling 53-51 at home on Tuesday to Wichita State.  The Rams are 1-1 on the year as they opened up the season with an 80-57 victory over Florida Gulf Coast. This will be the first road test for VCU.

Junior Juvonte Reddic is off to a strong start averaging 16 points and 9.5 rebounds. After 10 points in the opener, Reddic poured in 22 points and 10 rebounds in the close loss to Wichita State. The stats were very close in the loss, but VCU was just 12-for-23 at the foul line.

Senior Darius Theus is averaging 11.5 points and 4.5 assists while sophomore Treveon Graham, who had 15 points in the opener, is averaging 9.5 points.

After 40 points in the paint in the opener, VCU managed just 12 points against the Shockers.

The Rams are 21-5 all-time against the current members of the Big South Conference. VCU was just a few votes from entering the AP Top 25 Poll and the USA Today Coach Poll.
